Safety Guide to Driving in Costa Rica

Practical tips to help make your visit to Costa Rica as safe, enjoyable, and memorable as possible.

01

Road Safety & Terrain

Avoid driving at night

Many roads have limited lighting and signage. Potholes, wildlife, and pedestrians can be difficult to spot after dark.

Use engine braking on downhill roads

In mountainous areas, shift to a lower gear to let the engine help slow the vehicle. Excessive use of the brakes can cause them to overheat.

Crossing rivers and navigation

Never attempt to cross a river unless you are certain it is safe and shallow enough. Download offline maps, as mobile coverage may be limited in remote areas.

02

Theft Prevention & Technology

Signal blockers (Jammers)

Criminals may use devices to interfere with your smart key. Before walking away, always verify that your vehicle is locked by checking the door handle.

Valuables and "Smash-and-Grab" Theft

Never leave luggage, passports, or valuables visible inside the vehicle. These thefts often happen within seconds, even at gas stations.

The Flat Tire Scam

If you notice a flat tire shortly after leaving a public place and someone offers assistance, avoid stopping in isolated areas.

03

Interactions & Regulations

Right of Way & Traffic Signs

Vehicles already inside a roundabout have the right of way. Pay close attention to STOP signs painted on the road, as vertical signs may not always be present.

Urban Safety

In cities such as San José, keep your windows up and doors locked to reduce the risk of theft while stopped at traffic lights.

04

Emergencies & Logistics

Do Not Move the Vehicle

If you're involved in an accident, do not move the vehicle until the Traffic Police officer or insurance inspector arrives. Moving it could affect your insurance coverage.

Fuel & Payments

Gas stations in Costa Rica are full-service. Ask the attendant to bring the wireless card terminal to your window so your credit card never leaves your sight.
